UPCOMING STORIES

WAYMO-OUTAGE/ A stalling of robotaxis from Alphabet GOOGL.O unit Waymo at various San Francisco intersections on Saturday when a widespread power outage darkened city streets has sparked safety concerns over the readiness of autonomous vehicle operators to tackle major emergencies.

Following a fire at a PG&E substation that knocked out power to roughly one-third of the city, multiple videos posted on social media showed Waymo robotaxis stuck at intersections with their hazard lights turned on as traffic lights stopped working. Waymo resumed operations a day after a halting services Saturday evening.

But autonomous vehicles industry experts said the incident raises serious questions about whether robotaxi operators are ready to handle catastrophic events like earthquakes, wildfires, or floods and renewed calls for stricter regulation of the nascent but fast-growing industry as others, including Tesla TSLA.O and Amazon's AMZN.O Zoox race to expand robotaxi services.
