The crash of a General Motors (GM) 2010 GMC Sierra pickup truck involved a passenger-side air bag that ruptured and injured the vehicle's passenger, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said in an emailed statement to MT Newswires on Monday.
The NHTSA said it is in contact with the manufacturer and local law enforcement to gather additional information on the incident, and noted that the vehicle in question had an open Takata recall.
"Recalled, unrepaired Takata air bags are dangerous and pose an immediate risk, as occupants have been seriously injured or killed in otherwise survivable crashes," the NHTSA said.
The Wall Street Journal reported last week that GM and US auto safety regulators were investigating the possible improper deployment of a GMC Sierra pickup truck's air bags during a collision.
GM said last week in an emailed statement that "we have not gained access to inspect the vehicle, which is critical to understanding what occurred, and it would be premature to draw conclusions at this stage."
