Exchange-Traded Funds, Equity Futures Higher Ahead of First Trading Day of 2026

The broad market exchange-traded fund SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust (SPY) was up 0.6%, and the actively traded Invesco QQQ Trust (QQQ) advanced 1% in Friday's premarket activity ahead of the first trading day of the year.

US stock futures were also higher, with S&P 500 Index futures up 0.5%, Dow Jones Industrial Average futures advancing 0.3%, and Nasdaq futures gaining 0.9% before the start of regular trading.

The final Purchasing Managers' manufacturing index for December will be released at 9:45 am ET.

In premarket action, bitcoin was up by 1.5%. Among cryptocurrency ETFs, the cryptocurrency fund ProShares Bitcoin Strategy ETF (BITO) was 2.5% higher, Ether ETF (EETH) advanced 2.8%, and Bitcoin & Ether Market Cap Weight ETF (BETH) gained 1.7%.

Power Play:

Energy

The iShares US Energy ETF (IYE) was inactive, while the State Street Energy Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLE) was down by 0.1%.

Sable Offshore (SOC) shares were up 19% pre-bell Friday after a federal court on Wednesday rejected an emergency motion by environmental groups to block the restart of the company's Santa Ynez Pipeline System.

Winners and Losers:

Health Care

The State Street Health Care Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLV) advanced 0.1%. The Vanguard Health Care Index Fund (VHT) added 0.3% while the iShares US Healthcare ETF (IYH) was down 0.3%. The iShares Biotechnology ETF (IBB) was flat.

Omeros (OMER) stock was up more than 4% premarket after closing the previous session with a 1.3% rise.

Financial

The State Street Financial Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLF) advanced 0.2%. Direxion Daily Financial Bull 3X Shares (FAS) was up 0.6%, while its bearish counterpart Direxion Daily Financial Bear 3X Shares (FAZ) was 0.5% lower.

Bitfarms (BITF) shares were up more than 3% pre-bell after the company said it has agreed to sell its 70-megawatt site in Paso Pe, Paraguay, to the Sympatheia Power Fund, managed by Singapore-based Hawksburn Capital, for up to $30 million.

Industrial

The State Street Industrial Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLI) advanced 0.5%, and the Vanguard Industrials Index Fund (VIS) rose 1% while the iShares US Industrials ETF (IYJ) was inactive.

Redwire (RDW) stock was up more than 4% before the opening bell after closing 4.3% lower Wednesday.

Technology

The State Street Technology Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLK) rose 1.2%, the iShares US Technology ETF (IYW) was 0.8% higher, and the iShares Expanded Tech Sector ETF (IGM) was up 1.4%. Among semiconductor ETFs, the State Street SPDR S&P Semiconductor ETF (XSD) gained 1.6%, and the iShares Semiconductor ETF (SOXX) increased by 2.3%.

Super Micro Computer (SMCI) shares were up more than 2% in recent premarket activity after the company said it is introducing a new direct liquid-cooled blade server powered by dual Intel (INTC) Xeon 6900 series processors with up to 256 P-cores. Intel shares were also advancing more than 2% pre-bell.

Consumer

The State Street Consumer Staples Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLP) was down 0.04%, and the Vanguard Consumer Staples Index Fund ETF Shares (VDC) was also 0.02% lower. The iShares US Consumer Staples ETF (IYK) was up 1.3%. The State Street Consumer Discretionary Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLY) was up 0.6%. The VanEck Retail ETF (RTH) was inactive, while the State Street SPDR S&P Retail ETF (XRT) was 0.8% higher.

Tesla (TSLA) shares were up more than 1% pre-bell ahead of the company's expected release of Q4 delivery data.

Commodities

Front-month US West Texas Intermediate crude oil was down 0.8% to $56.94 per barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Natural gas fell 2.2% to $3.61 per 1 million British Thermal Units. The United States Oil Fund (USO) declined by 0.9%, and the United States Natural Gas Fund (UNG) was 2.4% lower.

Gold futures for February rose by 1.5% to $4,404.70 an ounce on the Comex, and silver futures advanced 4% to $73.40 an ounce. SPDR Gold Shares (GLD) was up by 2%, and the iShares Silver Trust (SLV) was 4.3% higher.
