BYD (HKG:1211, SHE:002594) is gearing up for the launch of a plug-in hybrid vehicle designed specifically for Brazil, Nikkei Asia reported Saturday.
The model, which had been in development for over two years, was conceived as a so-called flexible-fuel vehicle capable of running on any ratio of gasoline and ethanol, the report said.
Brazil is one of the largest markets for such vehicles in the world, and a flex-fuel model is considered crucial for any car manufacturer looking to establish a foothold in the country.
BYD is marketing its model as the world's first flex-fuel plug-in hybrid, the report said.
