One bright shining star stock has been AngloGold Ashanti plc (NYSE:AU), which is 302% higher than three years ago.    Also pleasing for shareholders was the 15% gain in the last three months.       So let's investigate and see if the longer term performance of the company has been in line with the underlying business' progress.  Trump has pledged to \"unleash\" American oil and gas and these 15 US stocks have developments that are poised to benefit.  To paraphrase Benjamin Graham: Over the short term the market is a voting machine, but over the long term it's a weighing machine.  One imperfect but simple way to consider how the market perception of a company has shifted is to compare the change in the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price movement.   During three years of share price growth, AngloGold Ashanti achieved compound earnings per share growth of 69% per year.    We note that the 59% yearly (average) share price gain isn't too far from the EPS growth rate. Coincidence? Probably not.   This suggests that sentiment and expectations have not changed drastically.  Au contraire, the share price change has arguably mimicked the EPS growth. The TSR incorporates the value of any spin-offs or discounted capital raisings, along with any dividends, based on the assumption that the dividends are reinvested.  It's fair to say that the TSR gives a more complete picture for stocks that pay a dividend.  As it happens, AngloGold Ashanti's TSR for the last 3 years was 332%, which exceeds the share price return mentioned earlier.  This is largely a result of its dividend payments!  A Different Perspective It's good to see that AngloGold Ashanti has rewarded shareholders with a total shareholder return of 282% in the last twelve months.   Of course, that includes the dividend.     Since the one-year TSR is better than the five-year TSR (the latter coming in at 33% per year), it would seem that the stock's performance has improved in recent times.  Someone with an optimistic perspective could view the recent improvement in TSR as indicating that the business itself is getting better with time.
