Nestle's Infant Formula Recall Could Add $1.5 Billion in Costs -- Market Talk

Dow Jones01-08

1320 GMT - Nestle's recall of some batches of infant formula could add around 1.2 billion Swiss francs ($1.50 billion) in costs, analysts at Jefferies write in a note. The recall in the five brands--NAN, BEBA, Guigoz, SMA and Alfamino--for containing the risk of cereulide affects 38 key markets, according to the analysts. The lost sales from longer-term consumer worries about brand issues might be a weight on profit and sales this year, the analysts say. Original sales from the products will remain intact, but costs from the recall will likely be added as expenses in cost of goods sold, the analysts say. Shares are down 0.3% at 74.30 francs.
