U.S. Natural Gas Lower Ahead of Storage Data -- Market Talk

Dow Jones01-08

0850 ET - U.S. natural gas futures are lower with the market awaiting the EIA's weekly storage report at 10:30 a.m. ET. Analysts in a WSJ survey predict a 120 Bcf withdrawal for the week ended Jan. 2. "Barring a massive surprise the market may look past an errant holiday-week EIA report to focus on evolving weather forecasts for late January," Eli Rubin of EBW Analytics says in a note. Prices rose yesterday on a colder outlook, but "after the repeated forecast collapses of the past month, where anticipated cold failed to roll forward, the market is likely waiting for higher confidence before fully pricing-in the late-January cold push," Rubin adds. Nymex natural gas is off 1.8% at $3.461/mmBtu.(anthony.harrup@wsj.com)
