Egg Supplies Are Improving, But Unpredictability Remains -- Market Talk

Dow Jones01-07

1043 ET - Egg supplies are continuing to improve after avian flu outbreaks wiped out millions of hens, but Cal-Maine Foods CEO Sherman Miller says the company isn't out of the woods just yet. "Global outbreaks continue, and recovery remains uneven and unpredictable rather than linear," he says on a call with analysts. He notes the company has navigated periods of supply disruption and price volatility in the past, and that things are looking up currently. During the recent quarter, breeder flocks grew about 13%, chick hatches were up roughly 65% and the average number of layer hens ticked 2.6% higher. (connor.hart@wsj.com)
