** Prices edged higher after demand for safe-haven asset rose, driven by geopolitical tensions over U.S. capture of Venezuela's president and expectations of U.S. rate cuts

** Top miners Newmont NEM.N rises 1%, Barrick Mining ABX.TO, B.N climbs marginally

** South African miners Gold Fields GFI.N climbs 3.3%, Harmony Gold HMY.N up 2.8% and AngloGold Shanti AU.N rise 1.7%

** Shares of Canadian miners Agnico Eagle Mines AEM.TO, AEM.N up 0.6% and Kinross Gold Corp K.TO, KGC.N up 1.7%
