Exchange-Traded Funds Higher as US Equities Rise After Midday

Broad Market Indicators

Broad-market exchange-traded funds IWM and IVV were higher Friday, and actively traded Invesco QQQ Trust (QQQ) gained 0.9%.

US equity indexes rose after a jobs report showed December payrolls rose less than anticipated, while a consumer sentiment index climbed more than forecast.

Energy

IShares US Energy ETF (IYE) and the State Street Energy Select Sector SPDR (XLE) each rose about 0.3%.

Technology

The State Street Technology Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLK) was up 1.1%; iShares US Technology ETF (IYW) and iShares Expanded Tech Sector ETF (IGM) were also higher.

The State Street SPDR S&P Semiconductor (XSD) added 1.6%, and iShares Semiconductor (SOXX) climbed 2.9%.

Financial

The State Street Financial Select Sector SPDR (XLF) rose fractionally. Direxion Daily Financial Bull 3X Shares (FAS) fell 0.5%, and its bearish counterpart, Direxion Daily Financial Bear 3X Shares (FAZ), was up 0.4%.

Commodities

Crude oil was up 2.7%, and the United States Oil Fund (USO) rose 1.2%. Natural gas dipped 3.9%, and the United States Natural Gas Fund (UNG) slipped 4.5%.

Gold on Comex was up 3.4%, and the State Street SPDR Gold Shares (GLD) added 0.5%. Silver gained 6.4%, and iShares Silver Trust (SLV) rose 3.7%.

Consumer

The State Street Consumer Staples Select Sector SPDR (XLP) was 1% higher. The Vanguard Consumer Staples ETF (VDC) and iShares Dow Jones US Consumer Goods (IYK) advanced as well.

The State Street Consumer Discretionary Select Sector SPDR (XLY) gained 0.9%. VanEck Retail ETF (RTH) and the State Street SPDR S&P Retail (XRT) were also higher.

Health Care

The State Street Health Care Select Sector SPDR (XLV) eased 0.1%, while iShares US Healthcare (IYH) and Vanguard Health Care ETF (VHT) also edged lower. iShares Biotechnology ETF (IBB) gained 0.6%.

Industrial

The State Street Industrial Select Sector SPDR (XLI) added 1.1%. Vanguard Industrials Index Fund (VIS) and iShares US Industrials (IYJ) also moved higher.

Cryptocurrency

In midday activity, bitcoin (BTC-USD) was up 0.6%. Among cryptocurrency ETFs, ProShares Bitcoin ETF (BITO) added 0.7%, ProShares Ether ETF (EETH) rose 0.1%, and ProShares Bitcoin & Ether Market Cap Weight ETF (BETH) gained 0.3%.
