Asian Retail Investors Increasingly Moving Into Equities -- Market Talk

Dow Jones01-09

0751 GMT - Asian retail investors are increasingly shifting money from bank deposits into equities, with strong buying seen across the region, HSBC strategists say in a note. They note that overall equity investment is still quite low and a large share of household financial assets is still parked in low-yielding cash, suggesting more money will continue to rotate into equity markets over the coming years, reducing a reliance on foreign investors. Still, Asian investors have strong interest in buying foreign assets, with Korean retail investors nearly tripling their U.S. equity purchases last year and Chinese investors buying Hong Kong stocks in record amounts. ETFs are also gaining popularity, HSBC adds, with mainland China now Asia's largest ETF market and Taiwan's ETF market expanding rapidly. (jason.chau@wsj.com)
