Cracker Barrel Cuts Corporate Staff -- WSJ

Dow Jones01-09

By Heather Haddon

Cracker Barrel is laying off several dozen corporate employees as the family-dining chain seeks to trim expenses following plunging sales.

The Lebanon, Tenn.-based chain notified corporate employees of the layoffs Thursday.

Cracker Barrel said during an investor call in December that it was seeking to save $20 million to $25 million in annual spending by streamlining its corporate support center, including through layoffs during the current quarter. The company last month reported a steep decline in quarterly sales and profit.

Cracker Barrel is navigating a firestorm after fallout from a new logo and changes to its marketing, stores and food last year. It scrapped the logo soon after its debut, and suspended store remodels. It has also since brought back classic dishes and introduced new deals to try and woo back customers.

Cracker Barrel shares rose 6.4% in Thursday trading. Over the past 12 months, the company's stock is down around 47%.
