(Updates with details from Rivian's statement in the second and fifth paragraphs.)
Rivian Automotive (RIVN) is recalling 19,641 vehicles previously serviced over the possibility that the toe link may have been reassembled incorrectly, the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said in documents available Thursday.
Rivian said in a separate statement that it will replace the rear toe link bolts, free of charge.
The regulator said that if a toe link was serviced using the earlier procedure, motion may eventually cause toe link joint separation while the vehicle is being driven, increasing the risk of a crash.
Rivian was notified of two recent customer complaints regarding the toe link failures and is aware of a single crash with minor injuries related to the alleged defect, the regulator said.
The company said it believes that less than 1% of the vehicles or about 200 units may be affected by the issue.
