Fed's Barkin Doesn't Expect Low-Hire Low-Fire Environment To Last -- Market Talk

1541 ET - Richmond Fed President Tom Barkin says the "low hire, low fire" job picture doesn't feel like one that's going to persist, in an interview with Kyla Scanlon. In 2026 - Barkin says he's watching the hiring and the layoff market very closely. When discussing this outlook, Barkin questions whether the market will break more toward hiring, or more towards firing. "If demand stays as strong as it is, eventually people are going to need to hire folks to fulfill that demand," he says.
