Japan imported 111,513 vehicles made overseas by domestic automakers in 2025, up 19% from a year earlier and the highest level in three decades, Nikkei reported Friday.
The figure surpassed the prior peak of 107,092 vehicles in 1995. Suzuki Motor (TYO:7269) led with 43,266 units, about seven times more than a year earlier, driven by imports of the Fronx compact SUV and the Jimny Nomade from India, where lower labor costs keep prices competitive, according to the report.
Honda Motor's (TYO:7267) reverse imports fell 18% to 37,022 vehicles, though volumes remained elevated following the launch of the India-made WR-V. Honda said it plans to import its new electric vehicle, the 0 Alpha, from India from fiscal 2027, the report said.
Nissan Motor's (TYO:7201) imports slid 33% to 9,595 vehicles, while Toyota Motor's (TYO:7203) fell 33% to 9,587. Toyota said it will begin importing three U.S.-made models, including the Camry and Highlander, for sale in Japan this year, according to the report.
