Toyota Motor (TYO:7203) led Japan's electric vehicle sales in the October-December quarter for the first time, ending Nissan Motor's (TYO:7201) long run at the top as competition picks up, Nikkei reported Friday.
Toyota sold 3,684 EVs, driven by the updated bZ4X, while Nissan's sales fell 56% to 2,857 units. Honda (TYO:7267) posted a record 2,732 vehicles, and Tesla sold about 2,600, according to the report.
EVs still account for just 1.9% of new car sales in Japan, but higher subsidies and new models from domestic makers and China's BYD are set to intensify competition this year, the report said.
