Meta Platforms' (META) WhatsApp is being considered for a very large online platform designation under the Digital Services Act by the European Commission, Reuters reported Friday, citing a commission spokesperson.

The designation is given to online platforms with over 45 million users per month in the European Union and requires platforms to monitor and take measures to mitigate illegal and harmful online content, according to the commission.

Meta and the European Commission did not immediately respond to requests for comment from MT Newswires.
