President Trump's economic team strategized Thursday night about how they would respond if the Supreme Court invalidates most of his tariffs-a decision that could've come down Friday, but wasn't issued.
"There was a big call last night with all the principals to talk about: If the Supreme Court were to rule against this Ieepa tariff, what would the next step be?" National Economic Council Director Kevin Hassett said on CNBC on Friday morning. Ieepa refers to the International Emergency Economic Powers Act, which underpins most of Trump's second-term tariffs.
The administration has other legal authorities it can use if the court rules against the Ieepa tariffs, Hassett said. Trump's team has plotted for months about which laws it would use to replace those levies.
Hassett didn't say which strategy the administration would choose, but said other laws could "get us to the same place" and could do so "basically immediately."
