New Zealand National Average Rental Price Drops 2.4% Year-Over-Year in December 2025

New Zealand's national average rental price in December 2025 was NZ$626 per week, dropping 2.4% year-over-year, according to a Monday statement by realestate.co.nz.

The Central Otago Lakes District region recorded the highest increase in average weekly rental prices, up 11.8% year-on-year to NZ$891 per week in the month. The average weekly rental prices in Central North Island were up 6.2% year-on-year to NZ$597 per week.

Around 13 of New Zealand's 19 regions saw average rental prices decline compared to the prior-year period, with Coromandel seeing a 41% drop to NZ$539 per week.

The number of new rental listings jumped 19.8% in December 2025 to 5,349, compared with 4,464 in December 2024. Total stock, at 7,577, was 15.9% higher in the month than in December 2024.

New listings in Wairarapa were up 142.9% to 51, the biggest increase year-on-year.
