BP's Incoming CEO Faces Challenging Environment -- Market Talk

Dow Jones01-14

0943 GMT - BP's incoming Chief Executive Meg O'Neill faces the major task of boosting investor returns in a weaker oil-price environment, Interactive Investor's Victoria Scholar writes. Shares have lagged behind London peer Shell in recent years, which adds to the pressure on management, she says. O'Neill will also have to deliver on BP's goal to significantly reduce net debt, Scholar says. It is positive that the energy company expects net debt to have fallen over the fourth quarter, she adds. Shares trade down 1.7% at 4.29 pounds. (adam.whittaker@wsj.com)
