FCC Chair Seen Lifting Local TV Cap, Allow Nexstar-Tegna Deal -- Market Talk

Dow Jones01-15

1138 ET - FCC Chairman Brendan Carr is likely to lift the agency's cap on local TV station ownership within one to three months, paving the way for Nexstar Media Group's proposed Tegna acquisition to get approval, Benchmark analyst Daniel Kurnos writes in a note. He sees President Trump's statements against TV consolidation as mostly aimed at the networks, and predicted that Newsmax, which has lobbied against the acquisition, will be ultimately unable to stop it. There's also willingness to update antiquated market definitions in TV regulation, he adds. "We remain of the opinion that, despite all the noise in the ecosystem, either by cap raise or by waiver, Nexstar will successfully acquire TEGNA, creating massive synergies and an in-market juggernaut."
