Central Bank Independence Very Important, Fed's Williams Says -- Market Talk

Dow Jones01-13

0119 GMT - New York Fed President John Williams tells reporters Monday evening that he and his colleagues keenly recognize the importance of central banks' independence. Williams' comments come after the Fed received subpoenas from the Justice Department, part of a potential criminal probe relating to Powell's June testimony about renovations of the Federal Reserve's headquarters in Washington, DC. "We've been criticized for policy decisions, you know, for as long as there have been central banks," he says. "I think that what is different, of course, is this idea of an investigation into Fed policymakers," he adds. (jessica.coacci@wsj.com; jessica_coacci)
