Washington Likely to Scrutinize Canada's EV Tariff Deal With China -- Market Talk

Dow Jones01-16

0802 ET - The deal struck between Ottawa and Beijing regarding tariffs is certain to raise eyebrows in Washington as the U.S. prepares to review, and renegotiate, USMCA, says Toronto-based trade lawyer Mark Warner. Warner, who practices in Canada and the US, says PM Mark Carney's decision to lower tariffs on some China-made EVs from a 100% level likely invites closer scrutiny in Washington about North America safety approvals, cyber-security regulations, and whether any Chinese producers, other than Tesla, are in a position to qualify for imports. Warner says Washington will also take note of Carney's remarks in Beijing regarding future investment by Chinese auto makers over the next three years in Canada. A spokeswoman for the US Embassy in Ottawa did not immediately respond to a request for comment. (Paul.Vieira@wsj.com; @paulvieira)
