BBC Should Adapt to Evolving Media Environment -- Market Talk

Dow Jones01-16

1152 GMT - The BBC must evolve to keep pace with a rapidly changing media landscape, AJ Bell's Dan Coatsworth writes in a note. The British broadcaster is set to unveil a significant new partnership with YouTube, under which it will create original programming for the platform for the first time, according to a report in the Financial Times. Coatsworth says the BBC has long fought to maintain its relevance, and it appears it has chosen to seize opportunities with competitors rather than challenge them. "This makes sense as it is a way for the BBC to show off its content creation skills and generate additional income beyond the license fee," he adds. However, the move is likely to reignite debate about license fees and whether a new funding model should be considered, he says. YouTube-owner Alphabet's shares are at $335.45 in premarket trade.
