Union Pacific, Norfolk Southern Deal Rejection Leaves Questions -- Market Talk

Dow Jones01-17

1641 ET - Union Pacific and Norfolk Southern didn't get what they were looking for when the Surface Transportation Board rejected their merger application as incomplete, but neither did critics who were hoping to see the $71.5 billion deal blocked entirely. Instead, the STB's ruling focused on technicalities in the application, including missing documents and an insufficient market share projection, and invited the companies to resubmit a revised version. The procedural ruling kicks larger issues down the road, such as whether the deal would threaten competition and drive up rates and prices, as rival BNSF Railway has charged.
