Canada's EV Deal With China Would Be Positive for BYD -- Market Talk

Dow Jones01-19 09:51

0151 GMT - Canada's agreement to import some Chinese electric vehicles at a preferential tariff rate would be a slight positive for Chinese automakers that are strong in exports such as BYD, Daiwa analyst Kelvin Lau writes in a note. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said Canada would allow imports of up to 49,000 Chinese EVs at a lower tariff rate. The volume of 49,0000 is small compared with BYD's overall annual sales of around 5 million, but it's a positive for the company. Combined with the EU's plans to impose a minimum price system to replace tariffs, Western economies' tough stance on Chinese EVs has been softening given a changing relationship between the U.S. and other countries, Lau adds.
