Travelers 4Q Profit Rises, Boosted By Lower Catastrophe Losses

Travelers reported higher fourth-quarter profit boosted by underwriting gains and lower catastrophe losses.

The insurance company reported net income of $2.5 billion, or $11.06 a share, up from $2.08 billion, or $8.96 a share, the year prior.

Core earnings were $11.13 a share. Analysts polled by FactSet expected $8.80 a share.

Revenue rose 4% to $12.43 billion, beating Wall Street's forecast of $11.01 billion. Net written premiums rose 1% to $10.86 billion.

The company said its profit was boosted by underlying underwriting gains, net favorable reserve development and lower catastrophe losses, which fell to $95 million from $175 million the year before.
