DAVOS: In Pharma, Europe Is Slipping Behind, With China Gaining, Sanofi CEO Says -- Market Talk

Dow Jones01-21

1116 GMT - Europe is slipping behind in the pharmaceutical industry, while China makes progress, Sanofi CEO Paul Hudson says in Davos. "For the first time, China and the U.S. publish more clinical papers, win more Nobel prizes and discover more medicines than Europe, and Europe is slipping behind," Hudson says at the World Economic Forum in Davos. "I think China is coming. China is going to launch 40% of the world's new medicines by 2030, 40%, and we're not having that conversation." Europe has all of the skills and capabilities to compete with China and the U.S. in the rest of the world if this is prioritized, but European policymakers seem more focused on "fair play" between member states than on competing with other powers, he says.
