Cruise Lines Ramping Up Promotions in 1Q -- Market Talk

Dow Jones01-21

11:39 ET - Promotional activity in the cruise industry has picked up this month as cruise operators compete for bookings in an expanded Caribbean market, JPMorgan analysts write in a note. They point out that MSC Cruises have led the month so far in flash sale promotions for the Caribbean and Bahamas, offering discounts and free admission for children at comparable rates to last year. Norwegian Cruise Line has also ramped up promotional activities in recent days, promising 50% off cruises and other free or discounted amenities in multiple regions, including the Caribbean. "Put together, we see the increased depth of promotional activity in January (vs. last year's Wave Season rates) creating a more competitive backdrop to secure close-in-demand bookings in the Caribbean," they write.
