Toyota Motor (TYO:7203) aims to have new vehicles contain at least 30% recycled material by weight on average from 2030, stepping up use of materials recovered from scrapped cars as it prepares for expected European Union rules, Nikkei reported Wednesday.
The automaker currently uses about 20% to 25% recycled content, mainly scrap-based steel. It plans to expand use of recycled steel, aluminum and interior plastics, with reclaimed materials also under review for bodies and engine parts, according to the report.
Because recycled steel can be harder to process, Toyota is prioritizing components that allow an easier switch. It has begun using recycled plastic from end-of-life vehicles in models including the Crown Sport and the latest RAV4, the report said.
The push reflects likely EU revisions to rules on end-of-life vehicles that would mandate recycled content, starting with plastics and later extending to metals. Toyota has designed vehicles to ease dismantling and material recovery, drawing on close work with recyclers, according to the report.
