France wants NATO to organize an exercise in Greenland and is ready to participate, the country's Élysée Palace said, a new sign of French resistance to President Trump's aim for the U.S. to take over the Arctic Island.

The French request could add to tensions around Greenland as European leaders prepare for Trump's arrival at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, where Trump is set to make a speech later Wednesday.

Trump on Tuesday ruled out accepting an invitation from French President Emmanuel Macron to have dinner in Paris on Thursday. Earlier Tuesday, Macron took the stage in Davos to denounce Trump's threats of tariffs against Europe to pressure the continent to surrender Greenland.
