Snapchat is establishing its augmented-reality glasses business into a distinct, wholly owned subsidiary.
The subsidiary, called Specs Inc., will oversee the launch of Snapchat's Specs, the company's wearable-technology product it announced last summer.
"Establishing Specs Inc. as a wholly owned subsidiary provides greater operational focus and alignment, enables new partnerships and capital flexibility including the potential for minority investment, allows us to grow a distinct brand, and supports clearer valuation of the business as we work towards the public launch of Specs later this year," Snapchat said Wednesday.
The social-media company said Specs will be powered by artificial intelligence and can support shared experiences across multiple users. It also said the product may reduce waste long-term by replacing physical objects like whiteboards, instruction manuals, toys and televisions with digital representations.
Shares were up 2.9% to $7.67 in early trading.
