Idemitsu Kosan Co. has begun building a large-scale plant to manufacture solid electrolytes, the company announced Thursday.
Solid electrolytes are a core component of all-solid-state batteries, which are considered to be the leading candidate for next-generation electric vehicle (EV) batteries.
The company aims to complete the construction in 2027.
In December, Idemitsu finalized its decision to invest in the plant, which will be built on the premises of its Chiba Complex in Ichihara, Chiba Prefecture. The plant is expected to have an annual production capacity of several hundred tons, dozens of times more than a small-scale demonstration facility already in operation.
Construction is also underway at the same complex on a facility to produce lithium sulfide, a raw material for solid electrolytes, with June 2027 the target for completion.
Idemitsu is collaborating with Toyota Motor Corp. to mass-produce all-solid-state batteries for EVs and install them in vehicles aimed to be put on the market in 2027-2028. The solid electrolytes manufactured at the new plant will be used in those batteries.
Idemitsu plans to announce strengthened investment in next-generation energy sources, including solid electrolytes and synthetic fuels, in its next medium-term management plan starting fiscal 2026.
