Santander's U.K. unit plans to close 44 of its physical branches in response to increased customer demand for digital services, putting nearly 300 jobs at risk.
The Spanish bank on Thursday said that the closures, which come as a response to changing customer behavior, will reduce its network to 305 branches. Around 291 employees are at risk of redundancy, it added. Santander UK had around 18,000 full-time employees at the end of 2024, according to a company report.
"We will continue to invest in both our branch network--comprising of full-service branches, counter-free branches, reduced-hour branches, Santander Locals, and our increasingly popular Work Cafes--as well as our digital banking services, so we can be there to support our customers however they choose to bank with us," a Santander UK spokesperson said.
