The U.S.' safety watchdog has opened an investigation of Ford's F-150 trucks between the years 2015 and 2017 on concerns of faulty transmission issues that could cause drivers to lose control of the vehicle.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's Office of Defects Investigation has opened an engineering analysis to investigate consumer complaints about sudden downshifts in the F-150 vehicles of those years.
The NHTSA said 329 incidents were reported by owners where the transmission unexpectedly dropped into first or second gear without warning, causing a loss of vehicle control from a sudden and rapid deceleration often accompanied by temporary rear wheel lockup, seizure or skidding.
The investigation follows a preliminary evaluation by the ODI launched in March to investigate the transmission downshifting issue.
ODI has also identified a separate risk where preliminary testing showed that if the sensor signal is lost while a vehicle is reversing uphill, it may shift into neutral and roll forward.
The engineering analysis will include component-level testing and vehicle testing, as well as a review of additional technical information to better understand the alleged defects.
