Exchange-Traded Funds Fall, US Equities Lower After Midday

Broad Market Indicators

Broad-market exchange-traded funds IWM and IVV declined. Actively traded Invesco QQQ Trust (QQQ) dropped 1.8%.

US equity indexes were lower after midday Tuesday, with a sell-off in technology pushing the Nasdaq Composite and S&P 500 down.

Energy

IShares US Energy ETF (IYE) and the State Street Energy Select Sector SPDR (XLE) each added about 2.4%.

Technology

The State Street Technology Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLK) fell 2.9%; iShares US Technology ETF (IYW) and iShares Expanded Tech Sector ETF (IGM) also moved lower.

The State Street SPDR S&P Semiconductor (XSD) dipped 2.9%, and iShares Semiconductor (SOXX) was down 2.9%.

Financial

The State Street Financial Select Sector SPDR (XLF) was 1.1% down. Direxion Daily Financial Bull 3X Shares (FAS) declined 3.1%, and its bearish counterpart, Direxion Daily Financial Bear 3X Shares (FAZ), climbed 3.3%.

Commodities

Crude oil rose 1.7%, and the United States Oil Fund (USO) gained 1.4. Natural gas added 2.8%, and the United States Natural Gas Fund (UNG) was up 2.1%.

Gold on Comex gained 6.5%, and the State Street SPDR Gold Shares (GLD) rose 6.3%. Silver climbed 8.8%, and iShares Silver Trust (SLV) was up 5.8%.

Consumer

The State Street Consumer Staples Select Sector SPDR (XLP) rose 2%. The Vanguard Consumer Staples ETF (VDC) and iShares Dow Jones US Consumer Goods (IYK) were also higher.

The State Street Consumer Discretionary Select Sector SPDR (XLY) slipped 0.9%. VanEck Retail ETF (RTH) gained 0.6%, and the State Street SPDR S&P Retail (XRT) added 0.5%.

Health Care

The State Street Health Care Select Sector SPDR (XLV) was down 0.9%, while iShares US Healthcare (IYH) and Vanguard Health Care ETF (VHT) declined as well. IShares Biotechnology ETF (IBB) fell 0.5%.

Industrial

The State Street Industrial Select Sector SPDR (XLI) rose 0.4%. Vanguard Industrials Index Fund (VIS) was higher, while iShares US Industrials (IYJ) eased.

Cryptocurrency

In midday activity, bitcoin (BTC-USD) was down 3.9%. Among cryptocurrency ETFs, ProShares Bitcoin ETF (BITO) lost 4.1%, ProShares Ether ETF (EETH) fell 4.9%, and ProShares Bitcoin & Ether Market Cap Weight ETF (BETH) shed 4.1%.
