Both stock and metals markets were on the ascent Tuesday.
U.S. stock indexes rose in morning trading, led by the Nasdaq composite. The S&P 500 was on course for a new record high, after closing Monday fractionally below a fresh record.
Earnings drove big stock moves. Palantir jumped after strong results late Monday, while PayPal slid after warning that earnings would fall this year. The chip maker AMD is among companies due to report results later Tuesday.
Some global markets notched big gains. Indian stocks advanced after New Delhi agreed a trade deal with the U.S. The Nikkei 225 in Tokyo hit a record closing high, while an historic surge in Samsung shares helped lift South Korea's Kospi nearly 7%.
The extraordinary volatility in metals markets continued. Gold futures swung back toward $5,000 a troy ounce, and contracts for silver soared more than 10%, though prices for both remain well below peaks hit before the crash late last week.
