BlackBerry has expanded a collaboration with software firm HaleyTek to provide audio architecture for Volvo Car's upcoming EX60 fully-electric sport utility vehicle.

The Canadian tech company's QNX and HaleyTek will deliver centralized software-defined audio as part of Volvo's new SPA3 infotainment platform, which will feature branded sound-system options from multiple prominent audio providers.

Unlike traditional approaches that rely on dedicated digital signal processors within amplifiers, SDA centralizes audio processing on a system-on-chip that provides automakers with greater flexibility, faster deployment of new features, BlackBerry said. The EX60 will be the first vehicle to implement a fully centralized SDA architecture using QNX Sound, a digital audio platform for software-defined vehicles that decouples audio and acoustics software from hardware.
