Uber's Autonomous Vehicles Thesis Seen as Flawed -- Market Talk

Dow Jones02-05

0854 ET - Uber faces more of a threat from Waymo and Tesla than it or its investors realize, Wedbush writes in a note. "We disagree with Uber that autonomous vehicles will prove to be a fragmented industry," the analysts say, noting that the demands of physical artificial-intelligence require large scale and data collection. "Only a few will be able to successfully deploy the proper technology required to offer safe rides to consumers," they say. "In the US, it is likely to be Waymo and Tesla." They note that 25% of Uber's profits come from its top 20 cities where Waymo, and possibly Tesla, could be operating by the end of the year. (elias.schisgall@wsj.com)
