Beverage producer Refresco agreed to acquire food and beverage supply chain company SunOpta for $6.50 a share in cash.

SunOpta shares closed Thursday at $4.83.

Refresco said the acquisition would expand its position in the plant-based beverages category and grow its North American presence.

"Acquiring SunOpta enables us to further expand our offerings to our existing retailer and branded customers, while adding leading out-of-home customers and capabilities," said Refresco Chief Executive Steve Presley.

The transaction is expected to close in the second quarter.
