But when you hold the right stock for the right time period, the rewards can be truly huge.  Take, for example, the Pizu Group Holdings Limited (HKG:9893) share price, which skyrocketed 384% over three years.    It's also up 101% in about a month.       Since the stock has added HK$463m to its market cap in the past week alone, let's see if underlying performance has been driving long-term returns. In his essay The Superinvestors of Graham-and-Doddsville Warren Buffett described how share prices do not always rationally reflect the value of a business.  One imperfect but simple way to consider how the market perception of a company has shifted is to compare the change in the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price movement.   Pizu Group Holdings was able to grow its EPS at 13% per year over three years, sending the share price higher.   In comparison, the 69% per year gain in the share price outpaces the EPS growth.  So it's fair to assume the market has a higher opinion of the business than it did three years ago.  That's not necessarily surprising considering the three-year track record of earnings growth. The TSR is a return calculation that accounts for the value of cash dividends (assuming that any dividend received was reinvested) and the calculated value of any discounted capital raisings and spin-offs.  So for companies that pay a generous dividend, the TSR is often a lot higher than the share price return.  We note that for Pizu Group Holdings the TSR over the last 3 years was 420%, which is better than the share price return mentioned above.  This is largely a result of its dividend payments!  A Different Perspective We're pleased to report that Pizu Group Holdings shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 265% over one year.   Of course, that includes the dividend.     That's better than the annualised return of 22% over half a decade, implying that the company is doing better recently.
