It went on to pass the 4,600 mark in December.\n\"The STI reaching 5,000 is a landmark moment for Singapore’s equity market,\" says Eugene Koh, a sales trader at CMC Markets Singapore. \"The journey from 4,000 to 5,000 took less than 11 months, reflecting not just market momentum but a genuine re-rating of Singapore equities.\"\nAccording to Koh, the key driver behind the STI's rally is the stellar performance of the three Singaporean banks, DBS Group Holdings D05, Oversea-Chinese Banking Corporation O39 and UOB U11. The banks make up around 50% of the STI's weighting and are trading at near record highs, says Koh.\n\"At 5,000 points, the STI trades at roughly 14.3 times estimated 2026 earnings, which is in line with its ten-year average. This means the market is not dramatically stretched historically,\" Koh says. \"That said, gains remain concentrated in the banking heavyweights, and the wider market has not participated as fully. We would welcome further broadening of the rally across sectors.\"\nThe STI has been on a tear since 2024, following the announcement that the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) was convening a review group to bolster Singapore’s stock market. The group published its final report on Nov 19.\n“Last year, STI’s total returns was over 28%,” says national development minister and MAS deputy chair Chee Hong Tat. Chee was speaking at the 60th anniversary celebration of the STI held at SGX Centre on Jan 5.\n“If we take a longer, five-year view, its total returns was over 100% in Sing-dollar terms, outperforming other regional markets,” Chee adds.\nMarket watchers and analysts remain bullish on the STI’s prospects. In October 2025, DBS Group Research’s group head Timothy Wong says the blue-chip index could reach nearly 10,000 points by 2040. Carmen Lee, head of equity research at OCBC Group Research, told the bank’s clients at an investment seminar on Jan 6 that Wong’s target could be reached in the coming years.\n“Earlier in the year, I think a couple months ago, you saw some reports come out saying that [the] STI should reach 10,000 in a few years' time,” says Lee. “So if you compound that, it’s really only 5% per year.
