MW The weirdest way to play Claude maker Anthropic is rallying again after funding round

By Steve Goldstein

SK Telecom's stock has benefited from its stake in Anthropic.

A $30 billion funding round by Anthropic, maker of the popular Claude large language model, led to gains for a far-flung investor in premarket trade on Friday.

SK Telecom $(SKM)$ (KR:017670), the South Korean telecom company, rose 8% in premarket trade, having gained nearly 50% this year.

Anthropic Thursday said late Thursday that it raised $30 billion, bringing its valuation to $380 billion.

SK was an early investor in Anthropic, having invested $100 million in 2023. It's also invested in other AI companies, including Perplexity AI and Penguin Solutions $(PENG)$.

While other publicly traded companies have bigger stakes in Anthropic, SK Telecom's market cap of $11 billion means its stake in Anthropic matters more to its valuation.

Analysts at JPMorgan said SK's management has not directly told investors what percentage of Anthropic it holds. The analysts estimated it was "well below 0.5%" due to dilution, which at Thursday's funding round means somewhere below $1.9 billion.
