Processed foods are facing increased scrutiny from the Trump administration and health-conscious consumers. Mondelez Chief Executive Dirk Van de Put said Tuesday that many concerns surrounding those foods are based on correlation rather than causation.
"The world would just not be able to feed itself if we did not have processed food," said Van de Put, in response to a question about a recent "60 Minutes" episode on ultraprocessed foods.
Van de Put said Mondelez, which makes products including Oreo and Chips Ahoy cookies, Cadbury chocolate and Ritz crackers, is committed to following all government regulations. But he added that the rules should be based on science rather than emotions.
"As long as it stays within reason we're ready to adapt," Van de Put said. "If you get into a discussion about emulsifiers that's completely different."
Shares in Mondelez fell 4.4%. The drop occurred after General Mills cut its sales and profit outlook for the year, weighing on packaged-food makers.
