Sterling Could Fall if BOE's Bailey Hints at March Rate Cut -- Market Talk

Dow Jones02-24

0854 GMT - Sterling could fall if Bank of England Governor Andrew Bailey boosts expectations for further interest-rate cuts as soon as March in a testimony later, ING's Chris Turner says in a note. Bailey will address the Treasury Select Committee at 1415 GMT. Bailey is most likely to swing the March vote to a rate cut, Turner says. "Commentary that he has seen enough to justify a March rate cut could firm up that pricing in money markets (a 25 basis points cut is now 80% priced) and even push the market to speculating on more than 50bp in BOE easing this year." The euro rises 0.1% to 0.8739 pounds and ING expects it to reach 0.88. (renae.dyer@wsj.com)
