Eni (E) said Wednesday it has reached a final investment decision to convert units at its Sannazzaro de' Burgondi refinery in northern Italy into a biorefinery, expanding its biofuels capacity alongside the planned Priolo project.
The company said both projects mark a significant step in strengthening the operations of Enilive, its sustainable mobility business, and are scheduled for completion by 2028. The biorefineries are expected to offer flexibility in producing hydrotreated vegetable oil diesel and sustainable aviation fuel, also known as SAF-biojet.
The Priolo biorefinery, where preparatory work is underway ahead of procurement and construction contract awards, will have a capacity of 500,000 metric tons per year and will be able to adjust production between HVO diesel and SAF-biojet based on market demand, Eni said.
Eni said it plans to increase total biorefining capacity from 1.65 million tonnes per year to more than 3 million by 2028 and over 5 million by 2030, including potential production of up to 2 million tonnes of SAF annually by 2030.
