Iranian state media said funeral proceedings for Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei will begin this evening at a vast complex in central Tehran, where his body will be presented for public viewing for three days before a funeral procession is held.
Officials said they hoped ceremonies would help create a mood of unity and cohesion, while Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, the speaker of parliament, urged people to turn out in large numbers. "We consider the national cause above any factional matter, and by being present in the streets we strengthen our support for dear Iran and the armed forces," state media reported him as saying.
The Mossala, where Khamenei's remains will be presented, is a powerfully symbolic site named after the founder of the Islamic Republic, Ruhollah Khomeini. His successor, Khamenei, often led prayers or delivered speeches there after taking over in 1989.
State media said officials are carefully arranging Khamenei's funeral arrangements. When Khomeini died, an initial attempt to bury him was abandoned because so many people rushed forward as they tried to touch his coffin. Several died in the stampede. His body was interred on a second attempt.
