Meta Platforms (META) was given a stern warning after Indonesia's Minister of Communication and Digital Minister Meutya Hafid's surprise inspection of the social media giant's operations in Jakarta on Wednesday found low level of compliance with national regulations.

Meta's compliance in following up after finding online gambling content and DFK, which refers to disinformation, defamation, and hate content in Indonesia, is very low at about 28.5%, the ministry said based on government monitoring data.

Meta is one of the platforms with the lowest compliance among other social media platforms operating in Indonesia, the ministry said. This figure is worrying given that Meta's user base in Indonesia is one of the largest in the world, with Facebook and WhatsApp users each reaching around 112 million people.

The government encourages Meta to immediately strengthen its content moderation system and increase the speed of handling illegal content, the ministry added.

Meta did not immediately respond to a request for comment from MT Newswires.
