Methanex Could Benefit from Tighter Methanol Market -- Market Talk

Dow Jones03-09

1114 ET - Methanex could be one of the winners in the current geopolitical landscape. CIBC's Hamir Patel says "global methanol markets were driven higher last week as buyers rushed to secure supply after the conflict in Iran broke out." The Middle East accounts for about one-fifth of methanol, with the top destination being China, and Iranian methanol operations were set to return from winter gas restrictions over the coming weeks. Producers have instead delayed restarts indefinitely since the conflict started, Patel notes. Methanex is the main gainer on the TSX Monday, up over 10%, bucking the trend of a broader decline across markets. (adriano.marchese@wsj.com)
