In part reflecting holiday-season purchases and auto sales, Malaysia's general retail sales reached 70.2 billion ringgit in January, up 6.1% on year, reported the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM) on Thursday.

Motor vehicle sales, including parts, accessories and repairs, were even stronger, rising 17.3% on year in January to 18.8 billion ringgits, added the DOSM.

Sales of motor vehicles, as a lone category, rose 25.9% on year in January, added the DOSM.

Sales at general stores rose 7.9% on year in January, while those at stores selling household goods rose 3.3% in the same time frame, reported the DOSM.

"The overall improvement in retail activity (in January) was mainly attributed to the school holidays, New Year celebrations, the disbursement of Bantuan Awal Persekolahan (school subsidies), as well as early preparations for the Chinese New Year festivities," said a DOSM official, reported The Star, a Malaysian newspaper

The nation's wholesale trade rose 6.6% on year in January, added officials.

The retail outlook in Malaysia is generally good, if recent central bank economic forecasts are on target.

Malaysia's gross domestic product (GDP) is expected to expand by between 4% and 4.5% in 2026, after a 5.2% rise in 2025, Bank Negara Malaysia estimated in February.
